Argentina legend Lionel Messi has provided fresh hope that he can be involved in the 2026 World Cup, but nothing is guaranteed. Messi starred in Argentina's run to glory in 2022, scoring twice in the final as they beat France on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

The Inter Miami star has been reluctant to look to far into the future, taking things as they come as he approaches the twilight of his career. Messi will turn 39 midway through next summer's tournament, but has shown a fresh belief he may be able to play a part.

“I hope I can be there. I’ve said before that I’d love to be there,” Messi told ESPN. “At worst, I’ll be there watching it live, but it will be special. The World Cup is special for everyone, for any country—especially for us, because we live it in a completely different way.”

Argentina finished top of the pile in South American qualifying for the World Cup, some nine points ahead of closest challengers Ecuador. That leaves the holders among the pre-tournament favourites, and Messi recognises the size of the opportunity.

"Argentina needs to take advantage of this moment," he added. "Coming off winning the World Cup gives you confidence and relief to prepare competitions differently."

Messi has continued to deliver at club level this season. He has scored more than 40 times in all competitions for Inter Miami, including six in the MLS playoffs as Javier Mascherano's side chases glory.

After having a hand in all four goals against FC Cincinnati, the veteran provided an assist for Mateo Silvetti as the Florida side thumped New York City to reach MLS Cup. There, they have Vancouver Whitecaps standing between them and a trophy.

Back in February, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni recognised Messi's desire to take part in next summer's World Cup in North America. "The first thing to say is that both Messi and his team-mates are aware that there is still a reasonable amount of time left. Messi and the rest of the team want to play in the World Cup," he said.

"But to be sure, you have to let time pass to see how you get there. He knows very well what we think. I'm not worried; the only thing I want is for him to be happy."

At club level, meanwhile, Messi agreed a new deal with Inter Miami in October. His new deal will keep him in Florida until 2028 as he looks to add more silverware before hanging up his boots.
