Which?, says: "Otherwise known as St Nicholas Fair, this market has been going for over 30 years and is a great place to find gifts.

"Dozens of alpine chalets with twinkling lights pop up in Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, selling art prints and Christmas decorations - as well as hot chocolate, and sweet and savoury snacks."

It adds that the market has a great attention to detail and it uses eco-friendly materials and ethical practices.

Not only this but the market is set amongst the historic buildings of York which include York Minster and the Shambles.

York is known for its stunning setting, which is only made even more romantic around the festive period.

One person who visited the market on Tripadvisor said: "It was a lovely market. Plenty of different choices of food. Just be aware it can get absolutely packed.

"But it was still a lovely market. I love Christmas markets. Feels so festive and gets you in the mood for Christmas."

Another penned: "The best christmas market I have been to. Far better than Birmingham.

"The city is safe and feels christmassy and vibrant. The stalls and the shambles shop are good value for money, considering it's a city.

"The Christmas lights are beautiful and it's a very friendly city that has an array of shops and gifts on offer.

"A fantastic olde English Christmas town with a nostalgic feel. It is on my yearly trip list - it was that good."
