South Korea: Lee Jae Myung, the president of signaled his support for the governing Democratic Party’s (DP) efforts to enact a series of contentious laws on judicial reform on Tuesday by calling for overcoming opposition to changes.

During a Cabinet meeting, Lee said that conflict and opposition are “inevitable” while trying to improve and rectify society’s “irrationalities.”
“Only when this is overcome, is there change,” he said. “That, indeed, is reform.”
With a majority in the National Assembly, the DP has been advocating for legislation that would penalize judges and prosecutors for purposefully misrepresenting the facts or legal principles in a case that is being tried or investigated.
In addition, the party has attempted to enact a measure establishing a special tribunal to deal with cases involving insurgencies resulting from the unsuccessful martial rule declaration by former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Both plans have encountered political and judicial opposition.
“Change is bound to result in gains for some and losses for others,” Lee said at the administration meeting. “Reform is not reform if there is no opposition or conflict. What can be done if this isn’t possible?
According to Yonhap news agency, Lee said that although there are diverse views on legislation, any measure may be enacted in a “reasonable manner” while honoring the people’s desire based on common sense and values.
In remarks that seemed to attack the Unification Church for its purportedly corrupt connections to the previous Yoon government, Lee also brought up the subject of disbanding religious organizations.
He questioned Cho Won-cheol, Minister of Government Legislation, on whether he had examined his directives to examine steps to disband religious organizations found to be involved in political meddling or supplying illicit cash.
In response, Cho said that if the organizations have consistently committed significant and organized crimes, a dissolution is legally permissible.
Cho said that he will provide a detailed report when Lee promised to follow up on the matter.
