Earthquake in Japan: A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan late Monday, injuring 30 people. Tsunami occurred in Pacific coastal areas. Many small tremors occurred after the earthquake. Japan’s meteorological agency has issued a warning of a possible ‘Great Earthquake’. According to reports, the Japanese government is still assessing the damage caused by the tsunami and the late night earthquake.
The earthquake struck at about 11:15 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture on Japan’s main Honshu island. People are in panic due to the continuous aftershocks after the earthquake.
Prime Minister Takaichi told reporters on Tuesday morning that about 30 people were injured. By now this number has increased to 33. At the same time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said that a tsunami of up to 70 centimeters (2 feet, 4 inches) was measured in Ikuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, south of Aomori, and up to 50 centimeters in other coastal communities in the area. About 200 passengers were stranded overnight at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport due to the earthquake.
