South Africa and India have been a significant part of each other’s growing appetite for T20I cricket in recent years.

India’s first-ever T20I match was against South Africa back in 2006. In the past 19 years, these two sides have clashed in 31 T20Is, with India winning 18 and losing 12. However, 23 of these matches have come since the start of 2018, including the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados, where India clinched the title by winning the final by a small margin of seven runs.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led team played a four-match T20I series in South Africa last year, which India won by 3-1.

Under Suryakumar, India have won all their T20I series since he took over as a full-time captain last year, with their latest feat being a 2-1 T20I series win in Australia.

Aiden Markram and co. will look to hand Suryakumar his first series defeat as India’s full-time skipper when the IND vs SA T20I series commences on December 9.

This has been a compelling tour: South Africa won the Test series 2-0 before Virat Kohli’s gobsmacking form helped India bag the ODI series by a 2-1 margin.

IND vs SA: What happened the last time South Africa played a T20I series in India?

The last time South Africa played a T20I series in India was in September-October 2022. India won the three-match T20I series by a 2-1 scoreline. The hosts claimed the series with wins in the first two games in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, while the visitors took a consolation victory in the third T20I in Indore.

But, that was the second time in the same year that India hosted the Proteas in a T20I rubber. South Africa and India competed in a five-match T20I series in India in June as well. That series ended up being drawn 2-2, as the series-decider in Bengaluru was washed out.

IND vs SA: Have South Africa Won A T20I Series In India?

South Africa have played four bilateral T20I series against India in India and claimed one series—in October 2015, when Faf du Plessis’ team defeated MS Dhoni’s side by 2-0 in a three-match T20I series. Left-handed batsman JP Duminy was the Man of the Series.

South Africa have an impressive record in the shortest format in India. Against India in India, the Proteas have played 12 T20Is, winning six and losing five, with one game being a washout. In fact, out of their four bilateral T20I series in India, South Africa have lost only one, two series were drawn, and they won a series in 2015.
