Jasprit Bumrah 2nd Indian Bowler to Take 100 T20I Wickets

A milestone moment in the game came when Jasprit Bumrah reached 100 T20I wickets. He became only the second Indian bowler to do so. Arshdeep Singh was the first and tops the charts for India on the list for most T20I scalps. But that historic moment was not without controversy.

Bumrah removed Dewald Brevis after the latter had slammed a quick 22. It was the seventh wicket to fall in the 11th over of South Africa’s innings. It was part of a collapse that saw them lose eight wickets for 34 runs. Brevis hit the ball high in the air and Suryakumar Yadav took an easy catch. The batter walked off as the Indians celebrated.

Did Jasprit Bumrah Bowl a No-Ball?

But when the TV umpire was checking to see if it was a fair delivery, Bumrah’s foot appeared to be over the line. It seemed he had overstepped, meaning it was a no-ball. But the TV umpire felt some part of Bumrah’s foot was grounded behind the line. So he deemed it a legal delivery meaning that the wicket was valid. Bumrah had reached his milestone.

So was Bumrah lucky to get his wicket off a no-ball or was the delivery fair? It seems that from different angles people had different points of view. The angle from which the TV umpire saw the replay made him feel that at least part of the foot was grounded behind the line. It was certainly a narrow call but the umpire’s decision was final and Bumrah certainly had the right to enjoy the wicket. As things stood, it did not have any major impact on the final result of the game.

He needs 16 to breach the 500-wicket mark at international level. The next game is in Chandigarh on December 11.
