With its neat rows of stone cottages, green vistas and backdrops straight off atea-box cover, it’s no surprise families enjoy visiting West Burton.

Tucked away in one of the prettiest corners of the Yorkshire Dales, this small community is the sort of place that looks like it was designed solely for a Sunday afternoon stroll. The first stop for most visitors is Cauldron Falls, just a short wander from the village green.

You’ll hear it before you see it with its rushing tumble of waterfalls that echo through the trees. Kids love clambering over the rocks at the edge (under the watchful eye of responsible adult, it goes without saying). From there, a gentle loop brings you to West Burton’s old packhorse bridge, hidden away like a secret.

  • Picture perfect village with 'magical' ancient stone circle no one knows about

  • I visited city that's perfect for a winter break and there's 1 thing I can't forget

It instantly sparks the imagination and you can almost picture traders leading ponies loaded with goods across it centuries ago. These days though it’s mostly families and walkers stopping for a photo or kids leaning over the edge looking for fish. The bridge’s age-worn stonework is as sturdy as ever, and is a quiet viewing platform for anyone wanting to soak in the peaceful flow of the water beneath.

Back in the heart of the village, the stone cottages steal the show, from mismatched doors, to colourful flower boxes spilling and leaning chimney pots. For families looking for a rewarding walk, there are footpaths heading out in every direction. Some climb gently towards the surrounding hills, giving you sweeping views across the dale, while others meander past farms where sheep wander over to the fence.

When it’s time for a break, West Burton’s pub and cafe options offer exactly the sort of hearty Yorkshire fare you hope for after a wander: steaming-hot soups, a range of mouthwatering sandwiches and big, sweet slices of cake. But if you fancy venturing out a little further then just a short hop from West Burton sits Leyburn, the bustling little town that calls itself the capital of Wensleydale.

Of course, you can’t talk about Wensleydale without mentioning the village’s superstar export: Wensleydale cheese. It’s been beloved for generations - even George Orwell was a fan - but its real boom came when Wallace and Gromit started singing its praises. Since then, the cheese has practically had celebrity status and demand for its crumbly goodness has been stronger than ever. However, for the full cheese experience head a few miles north-west to Hawes, home of the Wensleydale Creamery. Here, cheese has been crafted on the site for around a century, and visitors can watch the process from start to finish. Delicious.
