People who own and use a specific item could be among the "healthiest" in the UK, as it helps with an important habit few Brits manage to remember to do daily. These kinds of people may attract eye rolls, but they were told to stay "smug" about their choices by NHS GP and ITV star Dr Amir Khan.

Speaking on his recently launched No Appointment Necessary podcast show, Dr Amir Khansaid there's one habit that is arguably the 'healthiest ever'. He said: "We can put loads of moisturiser on our skin, but actually, drinking water is even more important for our skin."

Dr Khan admitted he "loved" co-host Cherry Healy's habit of drinking "first thing in the morning, and praised anyone who owns a 2L water bottle, which typically cost around £10. He added: "Everyone should have a glass of water by their bed that they should drink first thing in the morning.

"Hydrating first thing in the morning is one of the healthiest things you can do. You want to hydrate from the inside out." Most people in the UK wake up between 7am and 8am in the morning, depending on their schedule, giving them an early deadline to start the day feeling healthy and refreshed.

The ITV doctor is known for regular appearances on shows like Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning. He told viewers: "All those people who carry those big bottles of water around with them, and everyone rolls their eyes when they walk into the room and plonk their water bottles down - you guys are right.

"You need to be drinking that amount of water per day." He continued: "Be smug, be smart. Spread this message around."

Many people struggle to meet their daily water needs for various reasons. Some find plain water quite boring to drink, while others simply forget due to a busy lifestyle or work schedule, which often leads people to make an investment in a convenient water bottle that may need to be filled only once or twice a day.

Some large bottles, which hold up to a litre of water, are available in many stores, including Home Bargains, B&M, and most supermarkets. People can order something bigger online from Amazon, where there is a variety of 2L choices, including items like this for under £10.

How much water do people need daily?

Dr Amir Khan claimed that people need to aim for a few litres of water per day. He added that those who keep a glass by their bed can kick-start the day with some water already banked.

He said: "A glass, which is about 300ml, is how much water you should be drinking first thing in the morning. Through the course of the day, you should be aiming for two to three litres of water."

The NHS website claims that it's not just water that keeps our bodies hydrated, as a small percentage of our daily intake will come from food. Other sources of hydration include things like "lower-fat milk, sugar-free drinks, tea and coffee".

The health service adds: "Children should avoid sugary fizzy drinks, squash and juice drinks completely. Children who drink a lot of sugary drinks are more likely to become overweight. The added sugar in these drinks can also damage teeth."

A lack of water in our bodily systems can lead to dehydration. There are immediate side effects (such as feeling thirsty or having strong-smelling urine). This can develop into longer-term issues such as constipation, UTIs, kidney stones, poor/aching joints and mood swings.
