If you've ever got to the end of a cruiseand wished you could just keep on sailing, well, soon your dreams could come true.
A US-based company has plans for a residential cruise ship that allows you to live permanently at sea. However, potential passengers will need to pony up some serious cash to secure their space.
Villa Vie Residences already has one residential cruise ship, the Odyssey, which has been on a continuous round-the-world cruise since October 2024. It was held back by technical delays, leaving Belfast several months late, but it is currently on its way through a 15-year planned itinerary. The current cruise will travel around the world several times, with each trip taking three and a half years.
The company has now announced plans, which they've nicknamed Project Lumina, involving the acquisition of a luxury cruise ship for residents to live on, either full-time or part-time. They claim these all-inclusive cruises could even work out cheaper than living on land.
Those looking for a permanent home on the ship will be able to snap up an oceanview room from $539,999 (about £404,000) or upgrade to a suite with a balcony for $899,999 (approximately £637,000). There will be monthly fees payable for residents. However, there are less expensive options such as five-year ownerships and rentals for those who don't plan to make the sea their home long-term.
The average price for a flat in London, depressingly, generally sits between £530,000 and £610,000, meaning hopping aboard the new cruise ship could work out cheaper. Those who invest in these rooms don't have to live in them full-time. There are options, such as being able to rent them out when not in use. Passengers can also invite guests on board to stay with them for a fee.
While exact specifications of the ship are being kept under wraps, the company confirmed in a statement that the cruise will be 'ultra-luxury' and run parallel to their existing Odyssey service.
On Villa Vie's current residential cruise, the facilities are similar to those you'd expect to find on a normal cruise ship, with some tailored extras for those taking longer-term trips. There's fine dining, entertainment, a pool, optional excursions, and regular housekeeping. Residents also get a biweekly laundry service and medical visits are included. There's also a social club and regular events for passengers, so nobody feels lonely when taking this long voyage.
While many current passengers on the Odyssey are retirees, the cruise is also aimed at remote workers and digital nomads who can work from anywhere in the world. There's a business centre on board and high-speed WiFi provided by Starlink, so people can make video calls on the go.
In a statement to PR Newswire, newly-appointed President Chris Cox said: "I'm thrilled to join Villa Vie at such a defining moment for the brand and for the category. There is incredible demand for authentic, residential oceangoing lifestyles-from attainable world-travel homes to ultra-luxury villa experiences. Project Lumina will be about listening carefully to that demand and translating it into beautifully designed, high-value products that feel both elevated and deeply personal."
