Spotify's new feature lets you create playlists using AI prompts
11 Dec 2025
Spotify has launched a new feature called 'Prompted Playlist,' allowing users to create custom playlists by simply typing in their preferences.
The feature is currently available as a beta version for premium subscribers in New Zealand.
It uses the user's entire Spotify listening history to generate personalized playlists based on specific prompts.
A step forward in personalization
Feature evolution
The 'Prompted Playlist' feature is an upgrade from Spotify's existing AI playlist option.
The new tool allows users to give detailed instructions for their desired playlist, taking into account their entire Spotify listening history from day one.
This sets it apart from other playlists on the platform and gives users more control over the algorithm that curates their music experience.
Examples showcase versatility of 'Prompted Playlist'
User guidance
Spotify has shared examples to illustrate how users can use the 'Prompted Playlist' feature.
One example is a request for "music from my top artists from the last five years," with an additional request for "deep cuts I haven't heard yet."
Another example is a more complex prompt asking for "high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for cool-down."
Customization and refresh options for playlists
User control
The 'Prompted Playlist' feature also gives users the option to customize their playlists further and set a refresh frequency, be it daily or weekly.
This way, users can create their own version of Spotify's popular playlist, Discover Weekly, but tailored to a specific genre or time period they want to explore.
The company says each playlist will come with descriptions and context explaining why certain songs were chosen.
