This new gaming phone brings back memories of Xperia Play

Ayaneo, a brand known for its retro gaming handhelds, has unveiled the design of its first-ever Android phone.

The device, dubbed Pocket Play, is a modern take on Sony's Xperia Play from 2011.

It features a sliding screen that reveals a full set of physical controls including a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and two circular touchpads.

The Pocket Play also features dual sets of shoulder buttons on its back, but it doesn't come with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

This unique design makes it look a lot sleeker than Anbernic's RG Slide, another Xperia Play-inspired device released this year.

However, unlike the RG Slide which was only meant for gaming, the Pocket Play is expected to be a full-fledged smartphone replacement.

The Pocket Play comes with a slide-out gamepad, just like Sony's Xperia Play. It has a physical D-pad, start and select buttons, ABXY inputs, and side triggers.

However, instead of joysticks, it uses touchpads to enable the slider mechanism.

The device also sports flat polished edges and a taller display than its predecessor for a more modern look.

The taller aspect ratio of the Pocket Play could potentially impact usability, making the gamepad look narrower than usual.

This could also affect gaming performance as most games are designed for a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Retro titles, which Ayaneo usually focuses on, might have wasted space on either side of the screen due to this design choice.
