Cabin crew will often use plenty of different codes during a flight; and while they often are work-related, it turns out that staff have their own codes they use when they don't want passengers to know what they're talking about.
Now one flight attendant, who often shares behind-the-scenes details of her job on social media, has revealed a secret code that some passengers are labelled with.
Jeenie, who posts as @Jeenie.Weenie on social media sites including Instagram and YouTube, said that flight attendants will often label certain passengers with the acronym 'ABP' or 'ABPP'. ABP simply means able-bodied person, and it's a common code used to identify passengers who may be able to help in an emergency. As passengers board, flight attendants will often look out for ABPs, as well as identifying people who work in emergency services such as firefighters, doctors, nurses, or police officers.
However, in a skit posted to Instagram, Jeenie humorously reveals she doesn't just look for ABPs, but ABPPs - her nickname for an Able Bodied People Pleaser. An ABPP is a passenger who isn't just polite to flight attendants, but goes out of their way to help them out and even offers to take on some of their duties.
In the skit, the ABPP passenger fetches her own snacks, and even helps distribute them to fellow passengers, taking the burden off the flight attendants. Many people took to the comments to reveal they identified with the passenger. One joked: "Oh god ....its me... I'm the flight ABPP".
Another shared: "Ohhh I think I'm this I get so anxious and I'm autistic I was helping with the pillows and a family next to me. It makes me feel more calm and in control lol".
Others said they'd like to be an ABPP, but worried about bothering the crew: "Oh my God I would love to do this. But my anxiety would tell me that you guys would find it super annoying.", commented one Instagram user.
It's not the only codeword that crew will use when discussing passengers. Because of the cramped nature of planes, it's often difficult for flight attendants to have private conversations, so using codewords allows them to crack private jokes or communicate emergency details without causing panic.
According to Travel Nine, some other codewords used by flight attendants include the nickname 'Bob' meaning 'best on board', which is used to describe attractive passengers. Some crew also claim that when they're saying goodbye to passengers as they exit the plane, they say 'cheerio' or 'see you later' to the ones that they think are good looking.
Of course, it's no surprise that flight attendants also have plenty of codes for discussing annoying passengers without getting themselves into trouble. If you hear them talking about 'Phillip', they're probably not discussing someone they know. The nickname comes from an inside code PLIP, aka 'passenger I'd like to punch'. Also be wary if you hear about 'Foxtrot Oscar', which they use in place of FO, for 'f*** off' during a conversation...
