Most of us will have an ever-growing list of places we want to visit, but sometimes they can feel a little out of reach, considering the price of some flights. However, there's an easy hack when it comes to booking flights that could help you save up to £1,000.

In order to help travellers save money, a report from Which? revealed that choosing the right airport is essential when it comes to saving money. Instead of flying directly from London Heathrow or Gatwick, the consumer group advised searching for the cheapest flight from an alternative airport.

The consumer group compared the prices of flights using Skyscanner data to eight long-haul destinations from nine European airports: London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, and Stockholm. On average, across all destinations, flying from Istanbul was £139pp cheaper than flying from Amsterdam, and £137pp cheaper than flying from London.

The second cheapest airport at £612 was Oslo, followed by Paris and Stockholm (both £641), Madrid (£672), Copenhagen (£682) and Frankfurt (£705). They also noted that it all depends on where you're travelling to, adding that Istanbul isn't always a good option for flights heading west.

Copenhagen offered the cheapest flights to New York (£355), while Oslo had the cheapest flights to Los Angeles (£401). These flights weren't direct, but with cheap short-haul flights available from London, it's worth considering an indirect route if there are savings to be found. Additionally, Paris offered the cheapest flights to Madrid.

Which? revealed that London is the second most expensive city to fly from, after Amsterdam, when it comes to the eight long-haul destinations they evaluated. They added that it's almost £200pp cheaper to fly from Oslo to Bangkok, £247pp cheaper to fly from Stockholm to Tokyo, and around £182pp cheaper to fly from Oslo to Cape Town.

Sydney and Tokyo are two of the most desirable locations to visit when it comes to a long-haul flight, but the cost of the plane ticket can be expensive. However, Which? revealed that a family of four could save at least £1,000 heading to one of those inviting destinations.

Rather than flying directly from London Heathrow or Gatwick, Which? advised finding the cheapest flight to Istanbul. After analysing price data from Skyscanner, they found that the average cost of a flight from London to Sydney was £1,012, while from Istanbul to Sydney was £653.

This would result in a saving of £359 per person, which is more than £1,000 for a family of four. Flights from Bristol, Manchester and London to Istanbul can start from as little as £35, with the addition of checked-in luggage, but it's still thought to work out cheaper than flying from London to Sydney.

Additionally, Which? found that a flight from Istanbul to Japan, rather than from London, would be £350 cheaper per person. This would welcome another delightful saving if you're willing to travel to Istanbul before boarding your long-haul flight.
