Bareilly. The wedding hall was decorated, there was a crowd of guests and there was an atmosphere of happiness amid the beats of drums. The girl's side was welcoming the wedding procession with full enthusiasm, but no one thought that the celebration would turn into tension and chaos within a few moments. Just before the marriage ceremony, the groom made such a demand which spoiled all the happiness of the marriage.
The matter is of Sadar Bazaar of Cantt police station area of Bareilly. Murli Manohar, who lives here, had fixed the marriage of his daughter Jyoti with Rishabh, son of Ram Avtaar, resident of Nai Basti, eight months ago. The wedding procession reached the bride's house on time and the rituals also began. But just before the wedding, the groom demanded Rs 20 lakh in cash and a Brezza car.
The bride's father and other family members tried hard to convince the groom and his family. She expressed her inability citing her financial condition, but the groom remained adamant on his insistence. Within no time the matter escalated and a commotion started in the pavilion. Ultimately the groom started returning with the wedding procession without getting married.
The bride's father told that during the engagement, a program was organized in a big hotel of the city in the month of May, on which about three lakh rupees were spent. Apart from this, the groom was given a gold ring, chain and about five lakh rupees in cash. At the time of marriage, one lakh twenty thousand rupees in cash was also given in the form of AC, fridge, washing machine and Shagun. All this was beyond his means, yet he tolerated it all for the sake of his daughter's happiness.
The groom's new demand before the wedding completely broke the family. It was impossible for him to fulfill the demand of Rs 20 lakh in cash and a car worth around Rs 15 lakh. When they made this clear, the groom and his family became aggressive and the marriage was called off.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the police reached the spot and took the groom Rishabh, his father Ram Avtar and brother-in-law into custody. Police controlled the situation and started investigating the matter.
The bride's father alleged that this relationship was arranged by Inderpal, a resident of Siklapur. Due to not providing correct information in time, he had to suffer huge financial loss. More than Rs 15 lakh has been spent so far on wedding preparations and dowry.
Police say that at present no written complaint has been received from the bride's side. After receiving the complaint, further legal action will be taken. This incident once again exposes the bitter truth of dowry and the shameful thinking of a sacred relationship like marriage.
