An incredible new £880million airport is being built in a gorgeous African holiday spot popular for catching some winter sun. Cape Winelands Airport is set to open in 2028, becoming the second international airport in Cape Town, South Africa. The aviation hub aims to serve more than 5million annual passengers by 2050 and sustain approximately 100,000 direct and indirect jobs during the first 20 years. It will also ease "increasing demand" at the busy Cape Town International Airport.

The site is currently a privately-owned airfield mainly used for flying lessons, established in 1943 as a base for the South African Air Force. Construction to convert it into a commercial airport is hoped to commence next year, and the first phase will open two years later.

The project will cost £309million, including a £2.2million runway and passenger terminal, hotel accommodation and fuelling facilities.

The new airport is backed by Growthpoint Properties, a leading real estate investment trust. The hub, north-east of Durbanville, announced an agreement with Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO) as the contracting partner for the technical development and construction of the airport.

Development plans aim to create a "world-class aviation and logistics hub that supports economic growth, attracts new investment and enhances regional connectivity."

Cape Town is one of the hottest places for travel right now, winning a string of awards. It was named the most affordable and picturesque holiday destination for UK travellers in an annual report published by the Post Office.

Direct flights from London to Cape Town take roughly 11.5 hours, but it helps that Britons will feel no jetlag while holidaying in this haven, as the timezone is only two hours (+2) ahead of GMT.

The South African city is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and 28C temperatures in December. The country has been named one of the friendliest in the world, and has attractive vineyards to visit.
