Hidden in North Yorkshire lies a pretty town that has been compared to Italy. With blue skies and rowing boats gliding along the river, the town has a distinctly European feel that is rare in the UK.

In a TikTok video posted to an account called @makxylageorge, a woman showed the true charm of one UK town with the caption "the Italy of England". Knaresborough is known for its historic buildings, slow pace and independent shops.

One commenter on the post said: "I LOVE this place! If anyone goes try out the marigold cafe on the water! Too beautiful."

Another penned: "Knaresborough is so beautiful.

The town is situated on a dramatic clifftop - a similarity with many Italian towns which also sit on hills with panoramic views.

Not only this, but Knaresborough has a castle, stone bridges and medieval streets. In the same way, Italy is filled with historic fortresses and stone buildings.

The town is known for its riverside culture. Along its banks, you can find cafes on either side, which is essential to soaking up the atmosphere of the area. In Italy, many towns are defined by their rivers, which only adds to their whimsical and romantic charm.

However, not everyone was convinced that Knaresborough has similarities to Italy.

One person wrote: "I wouldn't go that far."

Knaresborough is a small but stunning town that is home to quaint medieval streets and a peaceful atmosphere.

While you're there, you can't miss seeing the iconic viaduct over the River Nidd.

In summer, you can enjoy a boat ride on the river which is an exciting opportunity to see the town from a different perspective.

Knaresborough is around 30 minutes from York by car and around 35 minutes away from Leeds.

It remains largely undiscovered by tourists and the town is often overlooked by visitors.

If you're looking for a unique destination to visit, this town is one to add to your list.
