Amazon to lay off 370 employees at Europe headquarters
17 Dec 2025

Amazon is preparing to lay off 370 employees at its European headquarters in Luxembourg. The move comes as part of a larger global job cut plan announced earlier this year.

The company had previously planned to cut 470 jobs, but after two weeks of discussions with employee representatives, the number was reduced to the current figure.

Job cuts to impact 8.5% of Amazon's workforce in Luxembourg
Impact assessment

The job cuts will affect about 8.5% of Amazon's workforce in Luxembourg, where it employs some 4,370 people.

Despite the layoffs, Amazon is still expected to remain one of the largest private employers in the country.

However, this would be a major blow for Luxembourg as these are the largest job cuts witnessed in over two decades.

Layoffs to primarily affect software developers
Job market shift

The layoffs are expected to mainly impact software developers, as the tech industry increasingly relies on artificial intelligence for coding tasks.

In October, Amazon had announced its plan to cut 14,000 jobs globally amid its growing use of AI.

Reports have also indicated that the company's plans to expand robotics could endanger some 500,000 US jobs.

Amazon's rationale behind the layoffs
Business strategy

In a memo sent to employees on December 12, Amazon described the layoffs as adjustments based on business needs and local strategy.

The company also said that it is going "well beyond industry benchmarks" in Luxembourg when it comes to severance packages.

Despite these cuts, both Amazon and the Luxembourg government have acknowledged that the company remains an important partner in this small country with a population of about 680,000.
