Tech News: Today Artificial Intelligence has entered our everyday life. He is writing news. Making pictures. Is coding. Helping in banking. Research is accelerating. Also giving support in medical decisions. AI is visible from mobile phones to offices. This speed is forcing people to think. Is AI just a tool or is something else in the making?
This debate has been fueled by Cambridge University philosopher Dr. Tom McClelland. He has said that the possibility of consciousness coming into AI cannot be completely ruled out. He believes that we have very little concrete evidence on this subject. Therefore, reaching any hasty conclusion can be dangerous.
Dr. Tom McClelland says the most sensible stance is agnosticism. That means neither completely accepting nor completely denying. He said that it is not scientifically correct to assume that AI will never be conscious. Existing evidence does not fully support this claim. Therefore the question remains open.
The biggest problem is that man himself does not know how consciousness begins. Scientists do not have any universally accepted definition of consciousness. When the roots of human consciousness are not clear, it becomes impossible to measure consciousness in a machine. This is why there is no reliable test of AI consciousness. Perhaps this question will remain incomplete in future also.
If AI becomes conscious, it will no longer be just a machine following orders. He will be able to feel. Will be able to recognize himself. This idea scares people. Scenes like killer robots seen in films are to this fear. Dr. Tom says that AI can also make this leap silently. Changes may happen without us even realizing it.
Many scientists believe that consciousness is a biological process. According to him consciousness arises from mind and body. Machines can only copy behavior. They cannot attain real consciousness. This side says that no matter how advanced AI becomes, it cannot become as conscious as humans. He will just keep following the program.
The real question is not what AI can do. The real question is how much humans understand consciousness. Until humans themselves understand the depth of consciousness, there will be fear and debate about AI. This is the reason why even scientists are avoiding giving clear answers today. The future is still open.
