Earlier this year, Fry Magazine compiled a list of the finest fish and chip takeaways and restaurants throughout the UK, and one of these establishments happens to be located in the most stunning coastal town. This magnificent seaside destination in Norfolk attracts people eager to soak up some rays during the warmer months, boasting expansive sandy shores and vibrant beach huts.
Nevertheless, Wells-next-the-Sea provides a peaceful retreat and serenity throughout the year for those seeking a delightful coastal getaway. Featured amongst the top selections is the beloved French's Fish Shop, which has been catering to locals and visitors since 1921.
Only establishments achieving scores of 96% and above from the judging panel earned their place on this prestigious list, and this charming establishment was amongst the chosen few.
The chippy benefits from breathtaking vistas across the waters of the Norfolk coast, providing the perfect backdrop whilst you tuck into your meal.
A recent TripAdvisor reviewer declared the cuisine was, in their view, "one of the best fish and chips in North Norfolk".
One delighted patron said: "What can you say that hasn't already been said? The best fish and chips I've ever had and consistently brilliant. No wonder there's always a queue halfway round the block in peak tourist season."
Another diner said: "This was the best fish and chips we'd had in a long time! The batter was crispy and had a good amount of flavour, and the cod was fresh and tasty.
"There was a huge queue, but it moved quickly, and staff were efficiently serving customers. It was definitely worth queuing for."
Beyond its delicious cuisine, Wells is renowned for its breathtaking coastline, adorned with countless vibrant beach huts.
Past these colourful shelters lies a magnificent stretch of pine forest, perfect for peaceful strolls and wildlife spotting, providing respite from the seaside bustle.
Dogs are welcome on Wells beach throughout the year, though barbecues, fires, stoves and sky lanterns are completely forbidden. A recent holidaymaker described it as having "everything you could wish for on an English beach".
They went on to explain: "A beautiful cafe and a Joules shop too. Very clean toilets. Access either over the steps or along the slope. Beautiful soft sand along the top of the beach and a spectacular row of beach huts backing into the pine forest."
Wells-next-the-Sea also boasts the magnificent Holkham, an impressive 18th-century manor house and estate. It provides an unforgettable day out as visitors can explore the grounds on foot or by bicycle, discovering four centuries of fascinating heritage within its historic walls.
The estate offers a thrilling calendar of events year-round, featuring exclusive guided visits and school break programmes alongside festive markets.
A recent guest posted their review, and said: "Stunning property to visit - not cheap to get in but well worth it.
"Staff were very friendly and helpful. And it's not just the hall itself; there is the walled garden (and a coffee station!), which is well worth the walk from the house. Definitely recommended."
