PTC News Desk: At least 10 people were killed and another 10 injured when gunmen opened fire in a township outside Johannesburg, police said on Sunday, marking the second mass shooting in South Africa this month.

The attack took place in Bekkersdal, about 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg, though the motive remains unclear, police said. According to a police statement, some victims were shot at random on the streets by unidentified attackers. The shooting occurred near a tavern or informal drinking spot in Bekkersdal, a poor community located close to several of South Africa’s major gold mines.

Those injured were taken to hospital for treatment, police added.

The incident follows another deadly shooting on December 6, when gunmen attacked a hostel near the capital Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child. Police said the latest shooting happened at a location that was illegally selling alcohol.
