New Delhi: Star India batter and Shubman Gill was excluded from Indias T20 World Cup 2026 squad on Saturday he was also removed from vice-captaincy in the process. Since returning to the T20I side at the Asia Cup 2025 Gill has seen a dip in his form failing to register a half-century in 15 matches. Reacting to the snub former India great Sunil Gavaskar advised Gill to accept the decision in the right spirit. Gavaskar further added that BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar would have spoken to Gill and given him clarity about his future.

I hope Shubman takes this in the right spirit. I wish him the best. Some of his injuries have been strange Gavaskar said speaking on Star Sports.

Gill made his comeback during Indias T20I setup ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 which pushed Sanju Samson down the order despite his strong performances as an opener.

And I think its a course correction. In the sense that when Shubman came into the T20 squad Sanju Samson went down the order. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma had formed a very good opening pair - a left-hand right-hand combination - looking to hit the first ball of the game for a six and getting India off to fabulous starts.

I think that is something Ajit will definitely speak to Shubman about assuring him that hes always going to be in the discussion. But for this particular tournament considering the fact that hes had some injuries and hasnt been in the best of touch theyve left him out. That doesnt mean he wont be part of future teams Gavaskar further added.

Axar Patel has replaced Gill as the vice-captain for the T20 World Cup 2026.
