India New Zealand FTA Signed: India has achieved another major diplomatic success on the international stage. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has been officially agreed between India and New Zealand. The joint announcement of this historic agreement was made during a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. This is India’s seventh free trade agreement in recent years.

Negotiations completed in nine months

India-New Zealand FTA talks began in March 2025, when Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visited India. In a record time of just 9 months, both the countries finalized the trade agreement. Both the leaders have described this agreement as ambitious, mutually beneficial and taking relations to a new height. Completion of the agreement so soon shows the strong political will of both the countries.

Trade and investment will get a big boost

From this free trade agreement Bilateral trade and economic cooperation will get a tremendous boost. This will ease access to the market and open new avenues of investment. Startups, innovators, entrepreneurs, farmers, MSME sector, students and youth will be able to connect with new possibilities in both the countries. This agreement will make India stronger in the global supply chain.

20 billion dollar investment target

Under this FTA, New Zealand has set a target of investing US $ 20 billion in India, which will be completed in the next 15 years. Both Prime Ministers expressed confidence in doubling bilateral trade in the next five years. Along with this, it has also been agreed to increase cooperation in areas like defence, sports, education and connectivity.

Expansion of India’s Free Trade Network

This is India’s seventh free trade agreement. Earlier, India has signed such agreements with UAE, Australia, Mauritius, Oman, Britain, EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein). India-New Zealand FTA will not only strengthen the relations between the two countries, but will also strengthen India’s global economic position.
