According to Budiono, the head of a search and rescue organization who, like many Indonesians, goes by a single name, the bus carrying 34 passengers lost control on a toll road, collided with a concrete barrier, and then rolled onto its side.

According to him, the inter-province bus toppled as it entered a curving departure ramp at the Krapyak tollway in Semarang, Central Java, on its way from Jakarta, the nation’s capital, to Yogyakarta, the old royal city.

According to Budiono, “the forceful impact threw several passengers and left them trapped against the bus body.”

The remains of six passengers who perished at the site were found by police and rescue personnel around forty minutes after the accident. According to Budiono, ten more persons died while receiving treatment or en route to a hospital.

According to him, 13 of the 18 patients receiving care at two local hospitals were in severe condition, while five were in critical condition.

As ambulances carried the deceased and injured away from the site of the accident, television news broadcasts showed the yellow bus tipped on its side, surrounded by police, members of the National Search and Rescue Agency, and bystanders.
