Muft Bijli Yojna : Gujarat has reached a remarkable milestone in India’s renewable energy journey by installing more than five lakh rooftop solar systems across the state. With a combined installed capacity of 1,879 megawatts, this achievement highlights Gujarat’s consistent commitment to clean energy development and positions the state as a clear leader in rooftop solar adoption. The progress has been driven by strong policy support, citizen participation, and long-term planning, making Gujarat a model for sustainable energy transition in the country.
Over the years, Gujarat has steadily strengthened its position in the renewable energy sector. Including installations under previous and parallel initiatives, the state has now crossed more than eleven lakh rooftop solar installations in total. This cumulative achievement reflects a focused approach toward energy security, environmental responsibility, and economic efficiency. Gujarat’s ability to translate national renewable goals into ground-level action has earned it the top rank in rooftop solar installations nationwide.
The rooftop solar expansion has been accelerated under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, which aims to promote residential solar power and reduce household electricity expenses. Gujarat has already achieved around fifty percent of its ambitious target of installing ten lakh residential rooftop solar systems by March 2027. Reaching this halfway mark well ahead of time demonstrates effective governance, administrative efficiency, and widespread public acceptance of clean energy solutions.
One of the key reasons behind Gujarat’s success is the strong financial support extended to residential consumers. So far, subsidies worth approximately Rs 3,778 crore have been availed by households, significantly reducing the upfront cost of solar installations. These incentives have made rooftop solar systems affordable for a wide range of income groups, encouraging mass participation and long-term savings on electricity bills.
To remove procedural barriers, Gujarat has implemented several citizen-friendly measures. The state provides assistance of Rs 2,950 toward regulatory charges for rooftop solar systems up to 6 kW. Network strengthening charges for this category have been waived, and consumers are exempted from entering into net metering agreements. There is also no load limit for residential solar installations, allowing households greater flexibility. Additionally, residents can sell surplus electricity back to the grid without paying any banking charges, making solar adoption financially attractive and operationally simple.
Gujarat offers a well-defined and appealing subsidy framework to motivate homeowners. For systems up to 2 kW, a subsidy of Rs 30,000 per kW is provided. For capacities above 2 kW and up to 3 kW, consumers receive Rs 18,000 per kW. Installations above 3 kW are eligible for a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000. This structured support ensures that both small and moderately large households can benefit from rooftop solar solutions without financial strain.
The state government views renewable energy as a cornerstone of future development. Gujarat has been actively preparing for an era dominated by solar power, wind energy, hybrid systems, and green hydrogen. Today, the state contributes a substantial share to India’s overall renewable energy capacity, reflecting years of planning and investment. Rooftop solar initiatives, in particular, have helped decentralize power generation and promote energy independence at the household level.

These include households that have significantly reduced their electricity costs and communities that contribute surplus power to the grid. Such real-life examples demonstrate how rooftop solar systems are not only transforming energy consumption patterns but also empowering citizens to actively participate in sustainable development.
Gujarat’s rooftop solar journey showcases how clear policies, financial incentives, and public engagement can work together to drive large-scale renewable adoption.
