Navi Mumbai International Airport has been developed to complement the existing airport in Mumbai, which has operated under heavy capacity constraints for years. The older airport has been handling over 50 million passengers annually, often stretching its operational limits. The introduction of a second international airport in the region is expected to significantly ease congestion, improve on-time performance, and enhance the overall travel experience for domestic and international passengers.
The airport is strategically located to serve not only Navi Mumbai but also surrounding regions such as Thane, Raigad, Pune, and parts of the Konkan belt. This wider catchment area positions the airport as a key gateway for both business and leisure travelers.
One of the defining features of Navi Mumbai International Airport is its focus on modern design and technology. Inspired by the lotus, the architectural theme blends aesthetics with functionality, creating a visually striking yet practical terminal environment. Connectivity has been a central pillar in the planning of Navi Mumbai International Airport. It is the first airport in India designed with four-way access, integrating road, rail, metro, and water transport options. This approach ensures that travelers have multiple choices based on cost, convenience, and travel time.
The airport is directly connected to South Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, popularly known as Atal Setu. This route offers the fastest road access, making it particularly attractive for time-sensitive यात्रियों. Rail connectivity has also improved with Targhar railway station emerging as the closest station to the airport, located just 10 to 15 minutes away. The inaugural landing is scheduled early in the morning from Bengaluru, followed by the first departure to Hyderabad shortly after. Along with one major low-cost carrier, other airlines including Akasa Air, Air India Express, and Star Air will also operate flights, signaling strong industry confidence in the new airport.
