Christmas tradition different from 25th December

Actually, this place is a small island located near Britain, where Christmas is celebrated on a completely different date. The name of this island is Foula, which is located about 20 miles west of the Shetland Islands. Christmas in Foula is not celebrated on 25 December, but on 6 January. Only about 35 people live here and it is considered one of the most remote places in Britain. Now the question arises that when the whole world celebrates Christmas on 25 December, then why does it not happen in Foula. The reason for this is the Julian calendar.

Different Christmas because of the old calendar

This calendar was created by Julius Caesar in 46 BC and was used for many centuries. In 1752, Britain adopted the new Gregorian calendar, in which the dates were moved forward by 11 days. But the people of Foula chose to continue following the old Julian calendar. Later in 1900 this difference became 12 days. That’s why when Christmas is over in the rest of Britain, Christmas begins on the island of Foula. This tradition makes this place special and unique.

Faula’s unique life

Foula Island is a small and very peaceful island spread over about 5 square miles. There are no pubs, shops, bars, Wi-Fi or National Grid facilities here. Electricity comes from solar panels and generators and essential supplies are transported only by boat or small plane. Despite this, this place is no less than a paradise for nature lovers. To reach Foula, one can take a ferry or a small plane from Shetland Mainland, but here only self-catered accommodation is available, hence food items have to be brought along. Due to bad weather and old traditions, Christmas is celebrated here in January instead of December, which makes this island completely different and special from the rest of the world.
