Fawlty Towers icon Prunella Scales died in October, aged 93, almost a year after her legendary actor husband, Timothy West, passed away. During their final years together, the couple lived in their beloved £3million family home near Wandsworth Common, south-west London - a house they shared for almost 60 years.

The house was bought by West in 1968. According to the Daily Mail, while there were reports that the couple sold the property six years ago, they were both still listed as owners by the Land Registry. In the years leading up to his death, West cared for his wife, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013. West said he had spotted signs in 2001. In an interview, the actor acknowledged that while he was Scales' primary carer, he was also very reliant on her and said: "We remember and are conscious of how much we are helping each other to continue in our lives."

Before his death, West expressed his fears about the house if he had died before his wife.

Having spent decades caring for her, he noted that she wanted to stay at the property until she died. The star previously said the idea of being forced to sell his home to pay for care fees left him appalled.

"I quite see how, in the state social services are in, it's a solution, but I would hate it," he said, before poignantly adding: "I don't want to go to my grave thinking: 'What's happening to the house?'

"I don't want it going to somebody who's going to say: 'Oh, get rid of all this silly Morris wallpaper, and those mouldings can all come out, and we can use that front garden as space for an extra car.'

"In theory, it's silly, I know it's only a house, but it's a part of us."

The couple, who shared two sons and seven grandchildren alongside West's daughter from a previous marriage, lived in the house for more than 50 years before his death.

West also revealed that the future of their house depended on who died first. He said: "Pru loves the house and especially the garden. She wants to stay here until the end.

"If I go first, the services that we don't use at the moment will probably look after her, but on my own, I don't think I'd want to stay."
