A short video shared online, showing Lalit Modi celebrating alongside fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya in London, quickly went viral and drew sharp criticism from citizens, political commentators, and legal observers. What began as a birthday celebration soon turned into a wider debate about accountability, public responsibility, and India’s ongoing efforts to bring economic offenders back to the country.
The controversy started when Lalit Modi uploaded a video on Instagram from what appeared to be Vijay Mallya’s birthday party in London. In the video, Lalit Modi casually introduced both himself and Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India.” The remark, made in a lighthearted tone, was perceived by many viewers as insensitive and disrespectful. Social media users accused the duo of making a mockery of India’s judicial system and the long-standing legal processes seeking their return.

Over the years, Indian authorities have pursued extradition proceedings against Mallya, and the case has seen multiple hearings in UK courts. While certain legal victories have favored India, the process has been prolonged due to appeals and procedural challenges.
Lalit Modi has been living overseas since 2010 and is also facing legal scrutiny in India. Investigative agencies have accused him of financial irregularities, including money laundering and violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act of 1999. These cases remain under investigation, and authorities have consistently stated their intent to take appropriate legal action.
