Mexico City. Thirteen people were killed and 98 others were injured when a train derailed on Sunday on a rail line linking the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum gave this information. The ‘Interoceanic Train’ connecting the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz derailed while passing a turn near the town of Nijanda. After this accident, traffic on the railway line came to a standstill.

“The Mexican Navy has informed me that unfortunately 13 people have died in the interoceanic train accident,” Sheinbaum wrote on the social media platform ‘X’. He said that 98 people have been injured, five of whom are in critical condition. The President said he has directed the Navy Secretary and the Under Secretary for Human Rights in the Home Ministry to visit the site of the incident and personally help the affected families.

Meanwhile, Oaxaca state Governor Salomon Jara told X that several government agencies had rushed to the accident site to assist the injured. According to officials, there were 241 passengers and nine crew members on board the train when the accident occurred.

The ‘Interoceanic Train’ was inaugurated in 2023 by then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The rail service is part of a broader effort to promote train travel in southern Mexico and develop infrastructure along the isthmus of Tehuantepec, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
