The Central Government has taken a big decision regarding Nimesulide, which is commonly used for relief from pain or fever. The government has immediately banned the manufacture and sale of all oral medicines containing Nimesulide in doses more than 100 mg. The reason is clear, there is a risk of serious damage to the liver due to excessive dosage.


What does the government’s decision say?


According to the Health Ministry, this ban will be applicable only on Nimesulide medicines with dosage more than 100 mg, only high dose will be banned, low dose will continue, hence medicines up to 100 mg will continue to be available in the market, production of high dose medicines will have to be stopped immediately. The medicines which are already present in the market will be recalled. The government has made it clear that this step has been taken keeping in mind the safety of the patients.


Why is Nimesulide in discussion?


Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is given in problems like fever, toothache, body ache and swelling. Its specialty is that it shows rapid effect, hence doctors also prescribe it. But medical reports and experts say that taking higher doses increases the risk of liver damage. Prolonged or excessive use can be harmful. Keeping this risk in mind, the government has taken strict steps.


What will be the impact on pharmaceutical companies?


The pharmaceutical companies which were making Nimesulide in doses more than 100 mg. Now they will have to stop manufacturing immediately. The stock present in the market will have to be recalled. Due to this decision, along with pharmaceutical companies, medical stores will also have to review their stocks.
