New York: Zohran Mamdani has been sworn in as the new mayor of New York City during a historic ceremony held at a decommissioned subway station in Manhattan. The Indian-origin Democrat took the oath by placing his hand on the Quran, becoming the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States.

“This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani said.

The 34-year-old leader was sworn in by New York Attorney General Letitia James at the former City Hall subway station.

Mamdani is set to take the oath again in a larger public ceremony at City Hall later in the day. The event will be administered by US Senator Bernie Sanders.

The ceremony will be followed by a public celebration, including a block party along Broadway’s famed “Canyon of Heroes,” a site traditionally associated with ticker-tape parades.

Mamdani now steps into one of the most demanding roles in American politics, assuming leadership of a city that commands global attention.
