In a major action against the drug trade, the Crime Branch in Thane, Maharashtra has seized 638 kg of ganja, whose value in the international market is estimated to be around ₹ 2.04 crore. The police have arrested the 36-year-old accused in this case. The operation, conducted on December 30, is being considered one of the biggest drug busts in Thane district in recent years.
The property cell of Thane Crime Branch had received secret information that a large consignment of narcotics was being brought into the city. Based on the information, the police laid a trap at Kharegaon toll naka of Kalwa located on Mumbai-Nashik Highway. On the basis of suspicious activity, an Innova car was stopped and during the search, 638 kg of ganja was recovered from inside the vehicle, which was very cleverly hidden.
The arrested accused has been identified as Chinna Tagur Laxman Nayak, a resident of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused had earlier been bringing ganja from Odisha and Telangana and supplying it to cities like Mumbai and Thane. Police suspect that this is not the work of just one person, but an organized gang is active behind it.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was produced in the local court, from where he has been sent to police custody till January 3.
Giving information on the matter, Amarsingh Jadhav, Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime), Thane Crime Branch, said, “Our team is investigating from where this ganja was brought and to whom it was to be supplied. We suspect that an entire gang is active in this area, and we will soon reach its remaining members.”
The police is now busy finding the source, financier and distribution network of the ganja. Officials say that more arrests may be made in this case in the coming days. Thane Police has clarified that such strict action against drug trade will continue in future also. This action not only sends a strong message to drug smugglers but also shows that Thane Crime Branch is working diligently against organized crime.
