One beautiful city that's been named the "best" in Africa reaches 25C next month, and there are direct flights from the UK. Cairo, the "city that never sleeps", topped the ranking on the 2025 Africa Report for the continent's most attractive cities.
With more than 22 million inhabitants, the report said the Egyptian capital owes its success "to the influx of capital in recent years", having attracted some $11.3billion (£8.4billion) in foreign direct investment between 2019 and 2023, according to data from fDi Intelligence. One joint project between Egypt and Japan has become a major draw: the Grand Egyptian Museum, which showcases thousands of ancient artefacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun.
Just outside the window lies the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx, Egypt's most famous landmarks and the last remaining wonders of the ancient world.
Back in the centre, the historic Khan el-Khalili bazaar is a favourite stop for visitors, with souvenirs, spices, jewellery and traditional cafes, where tourists can enjoy a fresh mint tea.
Cairo is often called the 'city of a thousand minarets', famed for its stunning architecture. The Citadel of Saladin, Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and Al-Azhar Mosque are all popular, and for good reason.
As one of the most densely populated cities in Africa, each neighbourhood has its own feel, from the leafy green oasis of Maadi to the nightlife hub of Zamalek on the River Nile, where visitors can take evening felucca boat rides.
Food plays a big role in city life, with popular dishes such as koshari, ful medames and fresh flatbread sold on many street corners.
Direct flights take just over five hours from the UK, and run from Manchester and London Heathrow. To avoid the intense heat while sightseeing, the city is slightly cooler from October to April.
