Health Desk. Brain stroke is a serious and sudden health problem, which can prove fatal if not treated timely. Every year lakhs of people in India are affected by brain stroke. This problem occurs when there is a blockage in the blood flow to the brain or a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Since the brain controls all parts of the body, a stroke can affect the ability to speak, walk, see, and understand.

Why does brain stroke happen?

To function properly, the brain constantly needs oxygen and nutrients, which are delivered through the blood. When for some reason the blood supply to the brain reduces or stops, the brain cells start getting affected. This condition is called brain stroke.

There can be many reasons behind this, the main ones being high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, increased cholesterol and physical inactivity. Stress and irregular lifestyle also increase the risk of stroke.

Two main types of brain stroke

1. Ischemic Stroke

This is the most common type of brain stroke. This happens when a clot forms in a blood vessel of the brain or the vessel becomes narrow. Due to this, blood is not able to reach that part of the brain. High cholesterol, heart disease and uncontrolled blood pressure are considered to be its main reasons.

2. Hemorrhagic Stroke

This stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts and blood starts spilling out. This puts pressure on the mind and can lead to a serious condition. Excessive high blood pressure, weak blood vessels and some congenital problems can cause this.

early signs of stroke

Symptoms of brain stroke appear suddenly. Common signs are a crooked part of the face, weakness in the arms or legs, trouble speaking, sudden severe headache or difficulty in vision. As soon as such symptoms appear, it is important to immediately contact a doctor.
