An 'amazing' new drama is now available to stream on Netflix, with viewers calling it "one of the most powerful and emotionally charged films of 2025". The courtroom drama based on a real landmark case, which film fans are already calling a 'must-watch', has received glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike.
Directed by Suparn Varma, the movie Haq currently holds an 83% score from critics and 92% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars Yami Gautam as Shazia Bano, Emraan Hashmi as Abbas Khan and Sheeba Chaddha as Bela Jain.
The synopsis from Netflix reads: "After her husband abandons her, Shazia Bano takes him to court, fueling a national debate on women's rights and justice. Inspired by a landmark judgment."
Haq is inspired by the real case of Mohd Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, where a 62-year-old woman from Indore filed a maintenance petition under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, after her lawyer husband divorced her under Islamic law (triple talaq).
The pair had been married for more than 40 years and, when she asked for a small monthly stipend after their divorce, he declined and claimed he was only required to provide for her for about three months in the 'iddat' period under Islamic law.
The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, leading to a historic ruling that is explored in the film, which is set in 1980s India.
Many movie fans have already expressed their appreciation for the 'gripping' drama, with one writing on Rotten Tomatoes: "Phenomenal film!!! A great movie, after a long time!!! Must watch!!"
Another agreed: "Class. Amazing biopic. The challenge of religious law and civil law coexisting. Landmark case that ensured all women get protection and rights from a divorce. She almost loses everything but keeps her faith. Amazing acting. Yami steals the show and her final monologue is something else. Definitely watch."
A third called the film 'beautiful' and an 'absolute must see', while another added: "Haq is a riveting courtroom drama that blends fearless storytelling with exceptional performances."
One more said: "10/10 A powerful and beautiful film highlighting women's rights. Both Yami and Imran delivered outstanding performances, but Yami was exceptional... She absolutely owned the screen."
Meanwhile, not everyone gave it a positive review, with a critic from The Hollywood Reporter India calling it "well-intentioned but reductive". However, there was generally an outpouring of support for the movie.
Over on IMDb, one person enthused: "Masterpiece of Truth, Courage, and Justice. Haq isn't just a movie - it's an experience, a statement, and a revolution in storytelling. Directed by Suparn Varma, this courtroom drama shines as one of the most powerful and emotionally charged films of 2025."
A second concurred, commenting: "Must Watch Movie. I really loved this movie...The story is strong and the film keeps you hooked from start to end. Yami Gautam is the highlight of the movie... Her acting is so powerful that she even overshadows Emraan Hashmi. Every dialogue she delivered gave me goosebumps. She truly deserves a National Award for this performance."
One more person branded the film "superb", writing: "Haq delivers a powerful cinematic experience with its gripping story and heartfelt performances." They went on to add: "What makes Haq special is its bold message about truth and integrity, leaving the audience inspired and thoughtful. It is one of the most compelling films of the year."
Haq is available to stream now on Netflix.
