Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has shared a positive update as he continues his Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Egypt. The 33-year-old left Anfield last month to join his national team for the tournament, currently being held in Morocco.
Salah played a pivotal role in guiding Egypt through to the knockout stages, netting winning goals during their group stage wins over Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Liverpool ace sat out Egypt's final group match against Angola on the bench, with his team already through to the last-16, and will now be looking to make a significant impact in their upcoming clash with Benin on Monday.
In anticipation of Egypt's next game, Salah posted two photos on his Instagram story, showing him smiling during the team's most recent training session.
Speculation about Salah's future at Liverpool was swirling before he left Merseyside to join up with the Egypt squad. The forward was left out of the Reds' matchday squad for their Champions League victory over Inter Milan - following comments he made in a bombshell interview after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
Salah was later included in Liverpool's matchday squad for their Premier League victory over Brighton, making a brief appearance off the bench in what was his final outing for the club before participating in AFCON.
Speculation has intensified, though, regarding Salah's Liverpool future as the January transfer window swings open.
Italian media outlets have even suggested that the Egyptian's former club Roma have an interest in signing Salah, although it's not clear if this ambition would be for January or next summer.
Despite Salah being contracted to Liverpool until 2027, uncertainty continues to swirl around his long-term future, prompting Anfield legend Jamie Carragher to weigh in on the situation.
"Will Mohamed Salah still be at Liverpool on February 1, 2026, or September 1, 2026? Yes, and no," wrote Carragher in his latest column for The Telegraph.
"Given Liverpool's injury situation following Alexander Isak's broken leg, the club cannot afford to allow Salah to leave in the January transfer window.
"After the bust-up earlier this season, the Africa Cup of Nations has come at a good time for everyone to take a breath. The next few months could turn into a long goodbye for Salah, however.
"The current Liverpool era will be forever synonymous with Salah. He is one of the all-time greats of Liverpool and the Premier League, so an emotional farewell at the final game of this season would be the perfect, choreographed send-off."
