Ikea might be better known as a Swedish furniture chain, but fans of the store know that their restaurant menu is entirely underrated. Their Swedish meatballs, salmon dinners, egg salad sandwiches and chicken tenders are surprisingly highly-praised, and even their kids meal options are budget-friendly and balanced.
But something plant-based shoppers have been wishing for is more vegetarian meals on the restaurant menu. Sure, there’s “plant balls” to mimic the iconic meatball dish, and you can order a vegetarian salad or pasta with marinara. But for a complete meal option, Ikea just added a new item that we’re sure that vegetarian fans of the chain will be thrilled about.
Ikea. EatingWell design.
Falafel Balls are now available at Ikea U.S. locations nationwide. Made with chickpeas, zucchini, onions and spices, these falafel balls are packed with fiber and protein for a satisfying bite mid-furniture shop. The platter is served with couscous, aioli and a lemon wedge for a vibrant, nutritious lunch or dinner. The chain notes that this launch goes hand-in-hand with their “effort to feature more plant-based options on the menu.”
Because the falafel balls are made with chickpeas, they offer the benefits of the legume, meaning they’re a gut-healthy, energy-boosting choice during a shopping trip. And the balls are paired with couscous, which is also naturally packed with fiber and protein for a fulfilling meal.
Honestly, if you went to Ikea just to try this dish, we wouldn’t blame you. But if you don’t have an Ikea nearby, try recreating this dinner at home with similar recipes, like our five-star Falafel Tabbouleh Bowls with Tzatziki or our Baked Falafel paired with whole-wheat couscous and mixed veggies.
