With the arrival of Makar Sankranti and the beginning of the month of Poush, the aroma of the traditional dish Poush Pitha fills the homes and courtyards of rural areas. This sweet snack is a great option that is loved by everyone, from children to adults. It's not difficult to make; in fact, with the right technique, it becomes incredibly easy and enjoyable. If you also want to make rice pithas at home, this recipe is for you.



Ingredients Preparation
To make rice pithas, you will first need some basic ingredients.


Rice - 1 cup, soaked in water for 2-3 hours.
Coconut - half a cup, grated.
Jaggery or sugar - 3-4 tablespoons, to taste.
Ghee - 1-2 tablespoons.
Salt - to taste.
Soaked rice is essential for making the base of the pitha. Soaking softens the rice and makes it easier to grind.


Make the Rice Paste
First, wash the soaked rice thoroughly. Now put them in a blender and add a little water at a time to make a smooth paste. Make sure the paste is not too thin; it should be slightly thick. Now the pitha base is ready.


Prepare the Filling


Combine the grated coconut and jaggery or sugar in a bowl. You can also add a little green cardamom powder if you like, which enhances the flavor and aroma. The jaggery and coconut mixture should be uniform so that each pitha has an even taste.


Make and Steam the Pithas
To make the pithas, heat water in a steamer or a pot. Now, make small balls from the rice paste and fill them with the coconut-jaggery mixture. You can also flatten them with your hands.


Lightly grease the steamer tray with ghee and place the pithas on it. Then cover and steam for 10-15 minutes. Make sure the pithas are fully cooked but not dry. Enjoy this sweet dish!


Once the pitha is steamed, it's ready. Let it cool down. If you like, you can sprinkle some ghee and grated coconut on top. This will not only make it look more attractive but also enhance the flavor. You can store the pitha in the refrigerator for a longer time, and it stays fresh for 1-2 days.
