Amidst the increasing trend of digital payments, cases of cyber fraud are also increasing continuously. Now fraudsters have adopted a new method by targeting debit and credit card users, knowing which you may also be shocked. In this fraud, neither OTP is asked directly nor card details are asked openly, but still the account can be emptied within a few minutes.

According to cyber security agencies, this new card fraud is being done very cleverly. Fraudsters call or send messages pretending to be bank employees, customer care executives or representatives of any big company. They then threaten the user with “urgent updates”, “reward points”, “card blocking warning” or “fraudulent transactions”.

How is the fraud being carried out?

In this new fraud, a link is sent to the user or some instructions are given on the phone itself. As soon as the user clicks on that link, he is taken to a fake website, which looks exactly like the official site of the bank. Here, as soon as the card number, expiry date or CVV is entered, the fraudsters get complete information.

In some cases, fraudsters ask the user to do a small transaction in the name of “verification” of the card. During this time, the card details come into their hands and without the user having any idea, a huge amount is withdrawn from the account.

Why is this fraud more dangerous?

Experts say that this fraud is dangerous because people easily fall prey to it. The thugs keep their style of conversation so professional that the other person does not suspect anything. Many times people think that because they did not share the OTP, they are safe, but this assumption may prove to be wrong.

Cases are continuously increasing

In recent times, such cases have come to light from many states, where fraud ranging from thousands to lakhs of rupees has been done through debit or credit cards. Banks and cyber cells are continuously appealing to people to be alert, yet the cases of fraud are not showing any signs of decreasing.

how to protect

According to cyber experts, one should not trust any unknown call, message or link. Banks never ask for card details, OTP or PIN number over the phone. If someone pretends to be a bank employee and asks for such information, then be alert immediately.

Also, if you notice any suspicious transaction to your card, immediately inform the bank and get the card blocked.
