New Delhi: After India’s memorable maiden Women’s ODI World Cup triumph last year, the attention shifts towards the new season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where the majority of India’s World Cup-winners will be in action. The WPL 2025 is all set to get underway from Friday, January 09, and the final of the season will be played on February 05.
Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the season opener at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Friday. The WPL 2026 will be played across two venues – the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara. Vadodara will host the final of the tournament on February 05.
The season promises to be an exciting one, with nearly all teams having undergone major changes at the WPL 2026 auction last year. Australian legend Meg Lanning, who was released by Delhi Capitals (DC) after leading them to three finals in three seasons, will lead the UP Warriorz in the upcoming season. With a strong squad at their disposal, the Warriorz will be hoping to end their title drought under Lanning this year.
Delhi Capitals have handed over the reins to Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who was one of the heroes of India’s World Cup-winning campaign last year. Rodrigues will be leading a team for the first time in her WPL career. Mandhana will continue to lead RCB, while Harmnapreet Kaur has been retained as the captain of the Mumbai Indians.
Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner will captain the Gujarat Giants in IPL 2026. The season will also feel the absence of some big names as Australian all-rounders Ellyse Perry and Anabel Sutherland have both pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons. Perry was an integral part of the RCB squad, while Sutherland was retained by DC ahead of the new season.
