How to Prepare Dal Dhokli at Home

Making Dal Dhokli: As winter sets in, there's nothing quite like the warmth of homemade Dal Dhokli (also known as Dal ka Dulha). This dish is not only tasty but also packed with nutrition. The lentils and spices provide essential warmth and nourishment during the colder months.

Dal Dhokli is a beloved dish in various regions of India, enjoyed by families for its comforting flavors. It’s quick to prepare and can be made with readily available ingredients. When cooked right, it pairs beautifully with rice, roti, or can be savored on its own.

Ingredients Needed:
1 cup Toor Dal
2 tablespoons Wheat Flour
Turmeric powder, Red chili powder
Tomatoes
Onions
Green chilies and Ginger
1 tablespoon Asafoetida, Oil or Ghee
Salt to taste

Preparation Steps:

Start by soaking the toor dal in water for 1-2 hours to expedite cooking. Once soaked, boil the dal on low heat, adding salt, turmeric powder, finely chopped green chilies, and grated ginger. A pinch of asafoetida can be added for extra flavor.

While the dal simmers, knead the wheat flour with a bit of salt and form small balls (dhokli). When the dal reaches a boil, gently introduce the dhokli into the pot.

Allow the mixture to cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee and prepare a tempering with chopped tomatoes, onions, asafoetida, and red chili powder. Pour this tempering into the dal and dhokli mixture.

Finish by garnishing with fresh coriander leaves. Serve the steaming Dal Dhokli in a large bowl. Be cautious not to overcook the dumplings, as they can become tough if left too long.
