The recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College, Jammu has been canceled by the National Medical Commission (NMC) with immediate effect. NMC withdrew permission to conduct MBBS course after finding serious violations of minimum standards in the college. This action has been taken on the basis of direct violation of the Medical Education Regulations 2023.
This decision has been implemented on this government medical college located in Jammu and it may impact the current and upcoming academic sessions.
The National Medical Commission investigation revealed that Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College failed to meet the minimum academic, infrastructure and faculty standards. NMC made it clear in its report that the shortcomings committed by the college are not just administrative but directly to academic quality.
The Commission refused to give any relaxation, terming it a direct violation of the 2023 rules. On this basis, it was decided to withdraw the recognition of the college, which was implemented with immediate effect.
NMC has also clarified that the interests of the existing MBBS students studying in the college will not be compromised. All current students will be transferred to recognized medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir. This transfer will be done under supernumerary seats, so that no student’s seat or academic year is affected. The Commission has assured that the academic records and progress of all the students will be completely safe and they will not have to suffer any kind of loss.
The NMC has also canceled the approval of 50 MBBS seats given to the college for the 2025–26 academic session. Along with this, it has been decided to confiscate the bank guarantee deposited by the college. This decision is being considered as a strict but necessary step towards ensuring quality and accountability in medical education. NMC has bluntly said that in future also similar action will be taken against institutions that compromise on standards.
