It's seriously cold outside, and with that comes the fact your car will need defrosting before you drive it. Rather than scraping at the windscreen for around 20 minutes each morning, there's a little-known button combination that could see you on your way so much faster than if you needlessly attack the glass with a credit card (seriously, not recommended).
It also doesn't involve pouring water of any temperature on your windscreen, and just comes down to sitting in your car and pressing a little-known button combination until the glass is completely clear and it's eventually safe to drive away.
"Here is the best way to defrost your windscreen according to a former NASA engineer," a woman at @eden_tyres_and_servicing explained on TikTok.
As soon as you get in the car, to get the ball rolling for a clear windscreen, you should "turn on the car heater immediately and put it at full blast".
Next, you should "turn on the car's air conditioning," which will "help soak up the remainder of any moisture inside".
Then you need to "turn off the car's air circulation button" because when it's turned on, it "traps the humidity," which isn't what you want at all.
The final button is "slightly unexpected," but it's the button to open your windows. Don't worry, you don't have to do it the whole way; however, opening them slightly will allow fresh air into the car, which will balance the temperatures of inside and out because the air is "drier" outside the car.
At the end of pressing all the buttons, you'll have a "nice defrosted windscreen," which means that you won't be fearful of getting stopped for driving dangerously. If you're caught without your windscreen being properly defrosted or foggy, you could be fined and also get points on your licence, so it's not worth it.
In the comments, someone recommended: "Also put your sun visors down - traps more of the hot air against the screen."
Another recommended getting "a windscreen cover" so the frosty conditions can't go near the windscreen and when you take it off in the morning, it's clear.
The RAC explains: "The cause of your car windscreen misting up is actually down to water vapour in the atmosphere that occurs when your body heats the air inside the cabin, as does your breath, increasing the amount of moisture it can hold."
They recommend a similar method to get yourself on the road quickly, saying to put your heating on first, "slowly increasing the temperature".
Then use the air-conditioning to "keep the atmosphere dry," and you can also roll down the windows a little bit.
"If there's a handy setting for demisting your windscreen, then use it," the RAC recommended.
