In the last few years, foldable phones have emerged as a new revolution in the smartphone world. These phones quickly became famous due to their big screen, different design and premium features, but one thing made common consumers think about them – their high price. The question arises that why are foldable phones so expensive compared to normal smartphones?

Biggest reason: foldable display

The biggest reason for the increase in the price of a foldable phone is its folding display technology. Making the flexible OLED or AMOLED screens used in these phones is very complex and expensive. This screen not only bends, but also works without breaking even after being folded thousands of times. For this, special material and multi-layer structure is used, due to which the cost increases significantly.

Strong and expensive hinge system

The hinge mechanism of a foldable phone also contributes a lot to its price. Precise engineering and expensive metal alloys are used to ensure that the part remains durable even when the phone is opened and closed repeatedly. Many companies provide special coating and sealing to protect the hinges from dust and water, further increasing the manufacturing cost.

Research and development expenses

Folding technology is still new. To make it better and reliable, companies have to invest heavily in research and development (R&D). The expense of new design, software optimization and display testing ultimately adds up to the price of the phone.

Limited production and low demand

While normal smartphones are mass produced, foldable phones are still made in limited numbers. Lower production means higher per unit costs. Additionally, foldable phones have not yet reached every category of consumers, so it is taking time to bring down the prices.

Premium Features and Brand Value

Companies often offer foldable phones in the premium segment. Features like high-end processor, better camera, more RAM and storage are provided in these. Also, due to new technology, the brand value also drives the price up.

Will it be cheap in future or not?

Tech experts believe that as foldable technology matures and production increases, prices may come down. However, for now this technology is likely to remain expensive compared to ordinary smartphones.
