Indian Street Food Abroad: Samosa has become the identity of India, especially in North India, its popularity needs no identity. Even if every sweet shop runs out of sweets, samosas are definitely available. This is why when Indians living in London get a “desi taste”, it quickly goes viral.
These days, a street food vendor named ‘Ghantwala Bihari Samosa’ is in the news on social media, who is seen selling samosas from the streets of London to the metro. Its unique style and desi style have given a new identity to Indian samosas on foreign soil.
Yogeshwar Shah alias Yog, popularly known as ‘Bihari Samosa Ghantwala’ in London, is said to be around 53 years old. According to the information available on biharisamosa.uk website and internet, he is taking his father Kalishaprasad Kishanlal Shah’s almost 50 year old recipe to the global level.
His father used to do samosa business in Nadiad, Gujarat, which Yogeshwar has now expanded to London. The special thing is that despite being a Gujarati, he brands himself as ‘Bihari Samosa’ and sells samosas by hanging a stall on his shoulder and ringing a bell. This unique style is making him viral on social media.
Many vloggers have shared videos of their shop and street selling. In a video, Yogeshwar himself tells that he makes around 5,000 samosas daily. According to the website of biharisamosa, the price of one samosa is 3 Euro (about Rs 315). In a viral video he claimed that he earned up to 10,000 euros in one day.
However, the cost of running a shop in a city like London is also quite high. Currently, ‘Ghantwala Bihari Samosa’ has two shops in London – one in front of Sanatan Mandir in Wembley and the other in South Harrow Market. Due to its unique selling style and desi taste, this samosa seller is now becoming the global face of Indian street food.
