Mumbai. Domestic stock markets fell for the fifth consecutive day on Friday and BSE Sensex fell 604.72 points (0.72 per cent) to close at 83,576.24. The Nifty-50 index of the National Stock Exchange also fell by 193.55 points or 0.75 percent to 25,683.30 points. This is a two-month low for both the indices. Except oil and gas, IT and public sector banks, indices of all other groups remained in the red.
Indices of auto, FMCG, realty, pharma, private banks, consumer durables, finance, health and chemicals groups were seen more under pressure. The Nifty Midcap-50 index of medium companies fell by 0.69 percent and the Smallcap-100 index of small companies fell by 1.81 percent.
Among Sensex companies, shares of NTPC and ICICI Bank fell by more than two percent. Shares of Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, Indigo, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Titan, ITC and Tata Steel fell between one and two per cent.
Shares of Maruti Suzuki, UltraTech Cement, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Hindustan Unilever, PowerGrid and Trent also closed in the red. Asian Paints shares rose more than one percent. HCL Technologies, BEL, Reliance Industries and Eternal also gained momentum.
