A new discussion has started in the Indian corporate sector regarding control over the social media activities of employees. A popular post has claimed that a company has banned its employees from liking posts of other brands and placing ‘Open to Work’ badges on LinkedIn. The scope of this instruction extends to personal activities outside the office, which has increased dissatisfaction among employees. The case also highlights the issue of workplace privacy and professional independence.
An anonymous user pointed out on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace subreddit that his company has given clear instructions that employees should not interact with other companies’ LinkedIn posts. The company argues that this affects “professionalism” and the “image of the company”. However, the name of the company has not been revealed yet and these claims have not been officially confirmed.
As soon as this post went viral, many users called it a violation of personal freedom of the employees. He said that LinkedIn is not an internal tool, and it is wrong to control activities outside the office. Some people also called it an example of micromanagement, which is becoming a concern in Indian corporate culture.
The pressure from companies on professional networking platforms like LinkedIn is not new. Some companies prevent employees from wearing ‘Open to Work’ badges, while others force them to post company- posts. The question arises that how much social media profiles should be considered personal and how much right do companies have to interfere. The issue also relates to data privacy and digital workplace ethics.
According to workplace experts, this attitude of companies is causing insecurity and distrust among employees. This trend shows that activities on LinkedIn are no longer just networking, but becoming a part of corporate policy. Many employees are being forced to resort to profile banners with company branding under pressure.
This controversy once again brings to the fore the issue of how private employees’ social media identities are in the digital age. More disputes may develop regarding this balance between companies and employees in the future.
