The Board of Cricket Control in India has announced the Delhi all-rounder Ayush Badoni as the replacement for Washington Sundar in the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Badoni is currently with the Delhi team for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy and will be joining the national team at Rajkot.
Notably, Badoni, 26, is getting his maiden call for the One Day Internationals, with an experience of 27 List A games. He has one century with five fifties, with an average of 36.47. In the ongoing VHT, his performance has been decent too. He bowled 22 overs in three innings, where he took four wickets at an average of 19.75, and the economy ticked to 3.59. With the bat, he could not show much as he batted down the order at 5.
BCCI issued formal statement on Washington Sundar's injury
The Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar reportedly suffered from pain at his lower rib while bowling in the first ODI of the three-match series against New Zealand at Vadodara on January 11. The pain popped up after he completed 5 overs for 27 runs. He walked off the field and did not return until India's batting came.
Harshit Rana was promoted over him, and Washington came at 8. Despite the pain, he rotated strikes, giving full opportunity to KL Rahul to complete the game. KL later said that he did not have enough of an idea of the intensity of his Washi's pain.
Later, in the press conference, the ODI captain Shubman Gill clarified that Washington has been taken for scans immediately. BCCI is currently waiting for the report.

On Monday, BCCI issued a formal statement saying, the team's medical board will take further steps following the scan reports. the BCCI statement reads,
"Washington Sundar reported an acute onset discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara, on Sunday. He will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI Medical Team will seek expert opinion."
Notably, India will play the second and the third ODI on January 14 and January 18 at Rajkot and Indore, respectively.
