One UK market is due to undergo a major development with a transformation soon to take place. Food markets are a popular place to enjoy a meet up with friends or family - and the north of England is a hotspot for some of the best around.

But at many markets, you'll also find a variety of other stalls with items such as handmade crafts, locally sourced produce and drinks. One of the most popular markets is Grainger Market in Newcastle. The Market dates back to the Victorian age, opening in October 1835 as part of Richard Grainger's major redevelopment of Newcastle city centre.

Today, the market is open from 9:30am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday.

One person on Tripadvisor said: "Great interior with so many independent stalls serving especially great food. If only we lived nearer than this would be our place to go to for quality fresh food."

Another penned: "No trip to Newcastle would be complete without a visit to Grainger Market.

"While away a couple of hours browsing various stalls selling all sorts of Merchandise with a large choice of food and drink available you will be spoilt for choice."

There are more than 100 businesses under the market's roof, reports Daily Mail. A £9 million Levelling Up Fund investment will see the Grade I-listed building set to be transformed into a destination to rival the best of Europe's indoor markets.

Newcastle City Council say the work will include the construction of an upstairs pavilion and new flooring, toilets, doors and seating.

There are even hopes that the market could become capable of hosting gigs and plays.

The transformation was originally due to be completed last summer, but is now expected to end early this year.

Newcastle is a popular city for tourists to visit - known for its culture, atmosphere and vibrant array of things to do and see.

On TripAdvisor, Grainger Market ranks 14th out of more than 300 things to do in Newcastle and has an overall ranking of 4.4 stars.
