Severe cold persists in many states of North India. The morning of 13 January (Tuesday) started with dense to very dense fog and severe cold. The weather may remain generally clear and sunny during the day but there is little chance of respite from the cold. The minimum temperature has fallen significantly in many areas, in view of which the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert. Visibility was less than 50 meters in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and western Rajasthan. The effect of snowfall in the hilly states will also be visible on the weather in the plains.


 


Overall, cold continues in the entire region. Red alert has been issued for cold wave and dense fog in Punjab and Haryana. There is a possibility of dense fog in some parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. According to the Meteorological Department, cold wave may occur in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The minimum temperature has reached below 0 degrees Celsius at many places in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad. The temperature in Himachal Pradesh was recorded between 1 to 5 degrees. The mercury has dropped below 5 degrees at some places in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh. The temperature in the plains of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal remained between 5 to 10 degrees.

A further drop in temperature has been observed in Delhi. The minimum temperature in Ayanagar was recorded at 2.9 degrees Celsius. There was a cold wave situation in many areas of the city on the night of 12 January. Cold wave forecast has also been issued for Noida on January 13.



Punjab and Haryana


Visibility was less than 50 meters in Amritsar, Ballowal Saunkhari, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur in Punjab. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevail in some areas of Haryana and Chandigarh. The lowest temperature in the plains was 0.6 degrees Celsius recorded in Bathinda (Punjab).

There is a possibility of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. A new western disturbance may become active in the western Himalayan region from January 15. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between January 15 and 18. There may also be rain in some areas of Punjab on 17 and 18 January.
